Chapter Eleven

THE NEXT few days took on a dreamlike quality. Trevor could hardly believe how touched by good fortune he suddenly was. His personal disaster had taught him to fear happiness and the other shoe inevitably dropping. But for the moment, life was near perfect.

The cat food commercial he’d voiced began to air, and his haughty voice came at random times from the radio or the telly. “Catalicious. The epitome of good taste.”

His act for the club was so well rehearsed, he could have walked the stage in his sleep. He was confident in his ability to inhabit his character, who’d undergone great hardship and emerged on the other side to reclaim her life. Aurora, named after the goddess of dawn, symbolized the new beginning he strove for himself.

The best part about that golden stretch of days was his evolving relationship with Jack. They shared a bed at night and spent as much time together as possible, given their busy schedules. What a refreshing thing it was to be busy and not sitting around bemoaning his fate. It made the bits of time he and Jack snatched the more precious.

They kept in touch throughout the day by messaging about amusing things they heard or came across, and when they were together, they shared a favourite movie, a meal, or a walk. The activity didn’t matter. When Trevor was with Jack, he felt closeness unlike anything he’d experienced before.

Sex was a new discovery every time. Their bodies moved in unison. Their breathing and even their heartbeats seemed to be in sync. The intensity of it was inexplicable, so Trevor stopped trying to decipher why and simply accepted that lovemaking was somehow better with Jack. What had started as a casual fling was quickly developing into much more. The depth of his feelings worried Trevor, for the more he allowed himself to care, the more it was going to hurt if things came crashing down. But for the present, he shushed his fears to a dull murmur and embraced his newfound happiness.

“You’re off tomorrow evening, right?” Trevor asked Jack one night as they fought for space over the single sink in their very small bathroom. “I know sometimes there are last-minute schedule changes when someone can’t come in.”

“I’m free,” Jack mumbled around his toothbrush. “What’s up?”

“My friend, Sylvia, is having a few of our close friends over for a sort of ‘welcome back to the land of the living’ party for me. I hoped you might come.”

Jack spit and rinsed before answering. “Sure you don’t want time alone wiv your mates? You’ll ’ave lots to catch up on.”

Actually, Trevor had given hours of thought to whether he wanted to invite Jack. For one thing, it was very early in their relationship, and, as Jack pointed out, there were fences Trevor needed to mend, things he needed to say to each one of these people. But also, Jack lived a life a world apart from Trevor’s set. Trevor wasn’t embarrassed to claim Jack as his, but feared Jack might feel rather a fish out of water with this group.
